“I do not consider myself as having mastered the flute, but I get a real kick out of trying."

- Sir James Galway

What do lessons cover?

  • In-person weekly private lessons in lengths of 30, 45, or 60 minutes, depending on age and ability.

  • Consultation lessons/supplemental study:  need a quick refresher lesson without committing to weekly meetings? This is for you!

  • College audition preparation

  • Ensemble placement audition preparation for High School and Middle School students

  • Competition preparation for High School and Middle School students

Lessons are open to all ages and abilities whether you are a young elementary student just starting out, a middle-schooler or high-schooler looking to further their abilities, or an adult who has been a long time fan of the flute and would just like to learn.  It is never too late to play the flute!

What to Expect

Every student learns differently, so lessons will be tailored to each student's learning style.  If the student is in band or orchestra at the time, these materials can be covered when the student has questions.  Students will also be expected to learn etudes (technique study) as well as solo pieces and scales.  Although they are hard work, lessons are also fun!  For my beginners, we will learn about the flute basics including posture, hand position, rhythm, embouchure, proper breathing, and how to produce a clear, steady tone. For my more advanced students, we will learn repertoire from many different time periods and work on advancing your technique to be able to master all forms of music.

The first lesson

  • Have you played the instrument at all before? If yes, then we will find out what you do know about playing the flute.  If no, the first lesson will probably be how to take the flute out of the case, how to put it together and hold it. Also expect mostly head joint work as it is easier to produce a sound on just the head joint.

  • Can you read music/rhythms?  If you have never seen music before, don’t worry!  We will start with only a note or two and only after it is comfortable to hold the flute and produce a sound. If you're a more advanced player, we'll discover what you do know and make a game plan of where to go from there.

  • I'll have some photocopies of music ready for you depending on your skill level, but please also bring any books or music that you have already. If you have something you're dying to learn how to play, bring it along!

Why pick me?

I understand that flute may not be the be-all-end-all, love-of-your-life for everyone, it may just be a fun past-time, but if I can bring some joy and peace in this crazy world to at least one student, then I consider it a win.
